The Deacons for Defense: Armed Resistance and the Civil Rights Movement

By Lance Hill

· Publisher ‏ : ‎ The University of North Carolina Press

· Publication date ‏ : ‎ April 26, 2004

· Edition ‏ : ‎ Annotated

· Language ‏ : ‎ English

· Print length ‏ : ‎ 400 pages

This work is about a Civil Rights group focused on the needs of Jonesboro, Louisiana in the 1960s. Over time the organization would grow to include chapters across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Established by veterans ,they developed a training program and created an environment that the Klan found reason to avoid. Conversely, federal law enforcement took a significate interest in this group that provided security for better known groups, most of which presented themselves as non-violent. Hill provides a deep covering of the background and growth of this group, which is in many ways the foundation of the later Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected

by Rory Miller

· Publisher ‏ : ‎ YMAA Publication Center

· Publication date ‏ : ‎ May 1, 2011

· Edition ‏ : ‎ 1st

· Language ‏ : ‎ English

· Print length ‏ : ‎ 242 pages

"Violence is a form of communication." I first heard this from one of my Bando instructors. Some of the first words of Rory Miller I encountered were 'violence is a form of communication'. His work has held my attention for a while now, since before reading these words from his pen. Clearly, we were of a kindred spirit. This work helps the reader relate to the mental and physiological aspects of violent encounters. As he puts it, there are four things that matter when facing violence: being prepared mentally, ethically, physically, and winning the fight without going to prison.

The Gift of Fear And Other Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence

by Gavin de Becker

· Publisher ‏ : ‎ Dell

· Publication date ‏ : ‎ May 11, 1998

· Edition ‏ : ‎ Reprint

· Language ‏ : ‎ English

· Print length ‏ : ‎ 432 page

In this work de Becker explains the difference between being anxious and suffering from anxiety. Being anxious can in fact save your life as it triggers the fight or flight process. He explains threat indicators in simple terms, breaking them down into seven clearly understandable categories. We usually have copies of this available at face-to-face classes at a significantly discounted price.

The Law of Self Defense: The Indispensable Guide for the Armed Citizen

by Andrew F. Branca

· Publisher ‏ : ‎ Law of Self Defense

· Publication date ‏ : ‎ April 26, 2016

· Edition ‏ : ‎ 3rd

· Language ‏ : ‎ English

· Print length ‏ : ‎ 306 pages

There is much to learn from this book that is extremely useful and thus important. Unfortunately you must be willing to accept that Andrew Branca is an unapologetic, blatant, Anti-American racist.

Left of Bang: How the Marine Corps' Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life

by Patrick Van Horne

· Publisher ‏ : ‎ Black Irish Entertainment LLC

· Publication date ‏ : ‎ June 13, 2014

· Language ‏ : ‎ English

· Print length ‏ : ‎ 228 pages

Based on Van Horne’s time as an United States Marine, this work talks about violent clashes as occurring on a timeline. If the trigger event is zero, everything that happens after that is reactionary, that moment being controlled by the enemy, an enemy that means you harm. Everything that happens before that, everything to the left of the trigger being pulled (the bang), is what you control. The better grip you have on the time left of bang the better you’ll be able to respond to the attack. We sometimes have copies of this at our in-person seminars at deep discounts.
